KEY WEST, FLA. -- A woman attempting to swim from Cuban waters to the Florida Keys called off her latest attempt Tuesday.
According to people traveling with Diana Nyad, she wrapped up the attempt after waging a battle against storms and jellyfish over the course of the swim that started Saturday.
Nyad, who was also swimming without a shark cage, had faced some threats from that quarter as well.
Her team members said that the decision to abandon this attempt came one day before her 63rd birthday.
This was her third attempt to make the swim within the past couple of years. Nyad's first ever attempt to swim across the Florida Straits took place in 1978. She tried again, twice, in 2011.
Those attempts were cut short by foul weather and jellyfish encounters.
After Nyad's last attempt in 2011, she had declared she was not going to try again. Earlier this year, she said she had a change of heart and chose to strike out across the straits.
