Democratic incumbent U.S. Senator Bill Nelson and southwest Florida Congressman Connie Mack IV will face each other in November.
Each man easily won their primary Tuesday with Mack coming out on top in a four-way contest. Former Florida congressman Dave Weldon, who cast himself as the true conservative in the race, was the closest thing Mack had to a challenger, but he appeared on scene too late to muster a substantial campaign presence.
Mack will try to win back the seat his father retired from in 2000.
Redistricting turned a pair of congressional allies into rivals in District 7.
Veteran congressman John Mica found himself challenged by freshman Sandy Adams. Mica won the challenge with 60 percent of the vote.
12-term GOP Congressman Cliff Stearns has been denied a 13th. Stearns conceded to political novice Ted Yoho in the central Florida district which includes Gainesville. Yoho was endorsed by the Tea Party. His lead over Stearns was only around 800 votes, or 1 percent.
Another veteran, Ander Crenshaw, sailed to victory in his GOP primary, with a clear 71 percent of the vote.
A former Florida trial lawyer who unsuccessfully prosecuted Casey Anthony on a charge of murdering her daughter defeated his former boss to become the new state attorney for Orange and Osceola counties.
Jeff Ashton used the acquittal to help defeat long-term incumbent Lawson Lamar, raising questions about Lamar's continued leadership.
