FSU, Florida Make Poll

GAINESVILLE, FLA. -- Florida State will begin the college football season ranked in the top ten.

The Seminoles received one first place vote and is ranked seventh in the USA Today Coaches Poll released on Thursday.

The top five of the poll has LSU, Alabama, Southern Cal, Oklahoma and Oregon. Then its Georgia, FSU, Michigan, South Carolina and Arkansas rounding out the top ten.

The Florida Gators will open the season ranked 23rd in the Coaches poll.

Three other state schools - South Florida, UCF and Florida International - did not crack the top 25, but did receive votes.

Miami did not receive any votes in the poll.

In other state sports news....

  • Atlanta remained two and a-half games back of the Nats in the NL East by beating Miami 6-1 to win the four-game series 3 to 1. Chipper Jones and Freddie Freeman each hit a two-run double, and the Braves scored six runs in the first two innings. Miami shortstop Jose Reyes tripled in the sixth inning to extend his hitting streak to 20 games.
