James Shields struggled again and Boston took advantage, beating Tampa Bay 7-3 to win the weekend series between the AL East foes.
Shields gave up six runs in five innings on 11 hits as the Red Sox pulled within a game of the Rays in the East division standings.
Tampa Bay scored three runs in the first inning off of Josh Beckett but did not plate another runner the rest of the game, leaving 11 runners on base for the game.
Mike Aviles and Daniel Nava hit home runs for the Red Sox, who finished the game with 14 hits.
Ben Zobrist was 3-of-4 for the Rays with an RBI.
In other state sports news...
The Miami Marlins left 11 runners on base and nine in scoring position as they were shutout for the ninth time this season, losing to Washington 4-0. Stephen Strasburg struck out seven Marlins in six innings to earn his tenth win on the season.
The Miami Heat will play two exhibition games in China this October as part of their preseason campaign. The NBA champions will play the Los Angeles Clippers on October 11 in Beijing and then three days later on October 14 in Shanghai as part of the NBA China Games.
Two supposed front runners for the Orlando Magic job are out of the running. Golden State lead assistant Michael Malone was told by Magic GM Rob Hennigan that he was no longer being considered for the job according to the Orlando Sentinel. SI.com reported that Indiana Pacers associate head coach and former Magic player Brian Shaw had removed himself from consideration. The job could go to San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Jacque Vaughn, Philadelphia 76ers associate head coach Michael Curry, Utah Jazz assistant coach Jeff Hornacek or Phoenix Suns player development coach Lindsey Hunter.
The Dwight Howard trade rumors took a break this weekend, but the Houston Rockets might have less cap space to entice the Orlando Magic to make a move. The Rockets are thought to be the leading candidate to make a move for the disgruntled center because they would be willing to take on some of the Magic's bad contracts. Houston might not have as much room under the cap to work if the New York Knicks fail to match the Rockets' offer for Jeremy Lin today.
One time central Florida resident Zach Johnson defeated Melbourne's Troy Matteson in a playoff to win the John Deere Classic. Johnson birdied the second hole to win his second PGA tournament this season. Matteson lead Johnson by four strokes entering the final round.
Terrell Harris scored 14 as the Miami Heat summer-league team won its opener in Las Vegas 71-59 over Toronto. Norris Cole and Dexter Pittman each added 13 points as the Heat won despite shooting 32.4 percent from the field. Miami forced the Raptors into 24 turnovers.
