TALLAHASSEE, FLA. -- The Sunshine State will be represented by both Florida and Florida State at the College World Series as both the Gators and the Seminoles won their respective Super Regionals over the weekend.

Florida State punched their ticket to Omaha by beating Stanford 18-7.  The Seminoles posted 17 runs in Friday's game.

Sherman Johnson was 3-for-6 from the plate with a pair of runs and five RBI including a three run homer in the second inning.

Josh Delph batted 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.  Seth Miller hit a grand slam during an eight-run eighth inning. Gage Smith came out of the bullpen in the fifth to earn his fifth victory of the season.

As for Florida, the Gators are heading to Omaha for the third straight year after beating N.C. State 9-8 Sunday afternoon in ten innings.

Casey Turgeon finished the game 3-for-5 from the plate with two runs and an RBI.  Justin Shafer was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.

Karsten Whiston struck out two N.C. State batters to earn his fourth win of the season. Keenan Kish got the final two outs to post his first save of the season.






In other state sports news:


  • The Tampa Bay Rays swept a three game Interleague series over the weekend against the Miami Marlins.  On Sunday, the Rays jumped out in front, scoring a run in the opening inning.  In the fourth, Matt Joyce hit a solo homer.  Three batters later, Elliot Johnson belted a two run home run that scored Ben Zobrist.  James Shields gave up four hits and just one earned run while recording five strike outs on the way to winning his seventh game of the season.  With the win, the Rays maintain a half game lead over the New York Yankees in the American League East.

  • Before Sunday's game, the Marlins recalled first baseman Gaby Sanchez from AAA New Orleans.  Sanchez was 1-for-4 on Sunday including an RBI double in the seventh inning.

  • The Miami Heat are preparing for the NBA Finals.  Miami will face three time NBA scoring champion Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder.  Game one of the Finals is scheduled for Tuesday night in Miami.  Chris Bosh is expected to start in game one.  Bosh missed several games after suffering an abdominal strain in the Heat's opening round playoff series.
