JENSEN BEACH, FLA. -- Federal regulators said Monday that they would be stepping up their oversight at Florida Power and Light's nuclear power plant at its Jensen Beach facility.
Representatives of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission said they were increasing the oversight because of the number of unplanned shutdowns at the plant.
Federal officials said that the plant continued to operate safely, but the shutdowns pointed to performance issues that they felt should be investigated and understood.
Authorities with FPL said they understood the need for the federal agency to engage in its oversight role.
A spokesman for the utility said the shutdowns were, in fact, a result of the company having a low threshold for identifying issues, and then responding to them pro-actively before the issues could evolve into problems.
The tenor of the comments seem to indicate a recognition that the feds are doing their job, and a confidence in the integrity of the system.
The NRC oversight is governed by a color-coded system. Green is the lowest level of oversight. Until Monday, that was the level assigned to the Jensen Beach facility.
It has now been bumped up a level, and, at least for now, is being overseen at the "White" level.
