OCALA, FLA. -- Law enforcement officials in Marion County say a man is facing a charge of cruelty toward a child.

Investigators said Christopher Welling was charged with tossing a pot full of boiling water on the child Friday night; and seemed to make light of the episode after the fact.

According to the Marion County Sheriff's Office, the 15-month-old boy was in the care of a baby-sitter when Welling walked into the apartment where she was keeping the child.

The boy's mother was at work, according to deputies, and Welling claimed he was a friend of the family.

The sitter told authorities that he seemed intoxicated and she felt uncomfortable around him, so she told him to leave.

Marion County detectives said that's when Welling picked up a pot of boiling water and splashed it onto the child.

Authorities said the baby sitter took the boy to the hospital immediately.

Deputies were able to track Welling to his home, and when they confronted him, he reportedly told them that the "kid got water splashed on him," and behaved as if the issue was all but inconsequential.

Deputies took him into custody.

Officials say he was being held without bond.
