TALLAHASSEE, FLA. -- After more than a year of steady decline, the jobless rate in the Sunshine State rose last month.

Unemployment went up by two tenths of a point, and now stands at 8-point-8 percent.

That's half a point higher than the national average.

There were 33-hundred fewer jobs in Florida last month, and there are 816,000 Floridians who can't find work.

Officials at the Department of Economic Opportunity are trying to minimize the impact of the July report by concentrating on the long term.

They say all the trends are positive and despite last month's losses, the state has added almost 70,000 jobs over the past year.
