TAMPA, FLA. -- Law enforcement agencies say they plan to boost their presence during this month's Republican National Convention on the Tampa waterfront convention zone.

Gunboats armed with mounted and racked machine guns will constitute part of that presence, as will infrared sweepers designed to track objects by their radiant heat.

Official said they also plan multiple checkpoints along the bay area to help ensure the convention security.

While the description of all the security measures may make the area seem more like a war zone than a convention zone, organizers say they want the best security they can get.

While they say they intend to make it unobtrusive, they also admit that they don't mind if it's very visible.

The mere presence of large security forces tends to act as a deterrent against some people who might attempt something violent.

And officials add that they won't be taking any chances with the casual boaters or swimmers, either.

Being in the wrong place at the wrong time might well be enough to get a person detained and probably arrested.
