ORLANDO, FLA. -- If you're feeling a bit blue over the fact that today is the start of the hurricane season, hopefully you can take heart from the fact that it's also National Donut Day.

It's a date that hearkens back to 1938, when the salvation Army paid honors to the women who served donuts in World War I.

Since that time, the tradition has carried on, taking place the first Friday in June of every year ... much to the irritation of stern dietitians, food purists, and others among the anti-fun activists.

In celebration of National Donut Day, many places are offering discounts or freebies.

Krispy Kreme is offering one free donut to everyone who walks in the door, no purchase necessary.

Dunkin' Donuts is offering a free donut with the purchase of a beverage.

And, if you visit a Tim Hortons and bring a facebook coupon, you can get a free donut.

Tim Hortons, however, is primarily in Canada, and the closest location to Florida is Detroit, Michigan. That would be a prohibitive distance to travel for a free donut.

The best bet is to find a place a bit closer to home, and celebrate National Donut Day there.
