PORT ST. JOHN, FLA. -- An apparent mass murder-suicide is being investigated in Brevard County involving a mother and her four children.
Deputies say Tanya Thomas shot her four children to death this morning at her Port St. John home before turning the gun on herself.
Three of the children had escaped from the home and went to a neighbor's house and said their mother had shot them. Thomas then called her children back to the house where she killed them.
"It's interesting because from what the neighbor said she was very calm, she just walked out, called them back," Lt. Tod Goodyear with the sheriff's office said, "they turned around and walked back to the house." Even after they had been shot.
The neighbor called 911 to report the shooting after the children tragically obeyed their mother to report the shooting. By the time the SWAT team arrived it was too late.
The children ranged in age from 12 to 17.
Authorities say the father, who lives locally, was very distraught at the news of his children. Deputies say it took them a long time to calm him down before they could talk to him.
