TALLAHASSEE, FLA. -- When it comes to power plant pollution, Florida is the sixth worst in the nation. That's according a ranking released by an environmental organization.

The Natural Resources Defense Council has compiled a list of the "Toxic 20" states and Florida plants are belching out more than 16 million pounds of pollutants every year.

John Walke, with the NRDC clean air program, says pollution from coal-burning power plants is a serious health hazard in America.

"Up to 11,000 premature deaths, 130,000 asthma attacks, 5,700 hospital visits ...," he notes, marking a few of the items in the top of the roster of concerns.

Things have actually improved, because utilities are switching from coal to cleaner-burning natural gas and the EPA is cracking down.

But NRDC lobbyists say the polluters are fighting back in Congress.
