JACKSONVILLE, FLA. -- Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. announced Monday that it will dispense Clopidogrel, the generic alternative to Plavix, in all of its nearly 400 in-store pharmacies.
According to a release from the Jacksonville-based company, Winn-Dixie pharmacies will begin to offer Clopidogrel effective immediately.
Plavix went off patent on May 17, paving the way for the less expensive generic alternative. Generic drugs routinely sell for less than 50 percent of the branded price.
Clopidogrel is used to prevent strokes and heart attacks in patients at risk for these problems.
The drug is in a class of medications called anti-platelet drugs. It works by helping to prevent harmful blood clots that may cause heart attacks or strokes.
John Fegan, vice president of pharmacy for Winn-Dixie Stores, said customers are constantly looking for value in ways to make ends meet; he added that the company was glad to bring the product to these people at such a significant saving.
