TALLAHASSEE, FLA. -- One of the republican candidates for governor is calling on her party to come clean and let the public see exactly how their donations have been spent.

In a letter to both of the candidates running for chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, State Sen. Paula Dockery (R-Lakeland) said a culture of fiscal irresponsibility has flourished at the party headquarters and it has become a public relations nightmare.

"You know the anger that exists among Republicans across Florida about our party's free-spending ways. Seriously, how do you ask everyday folks to contribute whatever they can, then refuse to let them see the credit card costs for communicating our message?" she wrote.

She said republicans are angry because their hard-earned donations are being spent on frivolities, like massages for the party elite.

"It's not easy to open the books, especially if it might put friends in the spotlight. But it's the right place to start, and leaders are expected to do what is right, even when it's difficult," Dockery said. "No longer can we dismiss this controversy as a dog on our leg that we simply can't shake. To move forward, we must be open and honest about what's happened in the past, and how, exactly, things will be different in the future."

RPOF Chairman Jim Greer announced last month that he is stepping down, effective Feb. 20. State Sen. John Thrasher and GOP activist and committeewoman Sharon Day are running for the chairmanship.
